Description
Created in 1999, Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park is located in the north of the Midi-Pyrénées region, in the département of Lot.
Its aim? To protect, organise and maximise the value of the natural, cultural and human heritage of its territory. A daily task and a long drawn-out job!
A paradise for hikers, potholers and lovers of many other outdoor sports, Causses du Quercy Regional Natural Park contains landscapes moulded by the permanent, age-old relationship between stone and water. The low-altitude limestone plateaus, covered with dry meadows (symbolic environment of the Causses du Quercy), are followed by wooded hills, riverless valleys, cliffs, gorges, etc. All the time, almost invisible on the surface, water flows deep underground through an immense network of galleries.
For centuries, men and stone have lived side by side. Dry stone walls are found everywhere, as are the amazing cazelles. From this daily confrontation with stone arose an architectural tradition that grants nobility to the smallest market town, the smallest house, the most isolated farmhouse. Castles, Templar commanderies, Cistercian and Hospitaller farms bear witness to a very long history.
