Description
A thousand spaces to discover, a thousand treasures to find, a thousand encounters to enjoy
Millevaches, a granite massif, occupies the highlands of the Limousin mountains, closely following the foothills of the Massif Central. The region, at relatively low altitudes, is classified as a middle mountain area. The slopes are gentle, forming accessible valleys in which the depressions encourage the storage of water. It benefits from the presence of a number of springs that supply the basins of the Loire and the Dordogne. Cavities with sinuous curves and generally peaty bottoms, are the main structural element in the landscape.
A land of remarkable spaces and environments
Millevaches is a unique, preserved area whose ecological wealth can be seen in both its animal and plant populations. The landscapes are sometimes open (peat bogs, heaths) or closed by more densely forested masses. In fact, the forest mass, 56% of which consists of conifers, takes up half the territory of the plateau. This natural environment makes Millevaches one of the best preserved spaces in France.
Wood and stone working have also led to the creation of an important architectural and historical heritage, as well as a very rich cultural heritage.
A land with a rich cultural heritage and a land of skills
As a rural region, the Millevaches is renowned for its traditional skills and, in actual fact, craft activities are closely related to the promotion of these local resources. Its agriculture and its gastronomy offer produce strongly connected to the land: renowned Limousin sheep and cow farms, berries, cheeses, etc.
A land of discovery
A place for resting and exploring: The Millevaches has many tourist attractions revolving around beautiful sites (Vassivière Lake, Les Monédières, etc.) and a large number of visitors come from neighbouring regions for the nature activities. Water is a source of leisure activities for fishermen and lovers of water sports. In the wintertime, tourism in the Millevaches also includes cross-country skiing.
A lively land
True associative dynamism has always exited in this region, driven by over 1500 associations which are active in all aspects of everyday life (family services, social services, environmental services, leisure, sports, culture, festivals, media, etc.).
