The volcanoes of the Auvergne are a true open-air geological museum. They are fascinating, intriguing, impressive. Four volcanic massifs await you during your escapades: the Cantal massif, largest stratovolcano in Europe; the Cézallier mountains, symbol of the open spaces; the Monts Dore with serrated relief; and finally the Chaîne des Puys, a magnificent alignment of around 80 domes and cones.

Landscapes created by volcanoes

Along the roads and paths, make sure not to miss the clearly visible traces of past volcanic activity. Come and climb the cheires, chaotic ancient lava flows, or admire themaars, deep circular lakes resulting from magma meeting the water in the phreatic layers. Travel around and explore this exceptional region, which will slowly uncover its particular features. When planning your trip do not forget the Lakes of the Godivelle, the superb valley U-shaped valley of Brezons, the great waterfall of Mont Dore with its impressive volcanic cliff or even the Vache and Lassolas peaks, covered in pozzolana, a very light red-coloured rock. Many other natural sites await you and will quench your thirst for discovery.

Land of legends

Across the world, volcanoes represent a gaping doorway to darkness. In the Auvergne, these ancient lava monsters still provide material for many stories and legends. The crater lakes are perhaps the most intriguing element. It is said that throwing a stone into Lake Pavin can set off a terrible storm. Running around Lake Menet will bring rain... Come and discover the mysterious Auvergne with the help of a storyteller!

Volcanic water, the beneficial effects of eruptions

The Auvergne volcanoes are also known for the beneficial waters they contain. The mineral and thermal waters are a precious resource in the region. The waters acquire many properties as they pass through the volcanic rock. They become charged with soluble chemical elements that grant them recognised therapeutic values. Volcanic rock is also an excellent filter for surface water. When passing through these rocks, the water looses any unwanted elements and becomes charged with rare elements. Why not enjoy the beneficial effect of volcanic waters during your trip?

Volcanic rock, from cutting to art

Pozzolana, Volvic stone, trachyte, tuff, etc. are some of the volcanic rocks that can be found in this region. These rocks have long been used by humans in the typical architecture of their settlements and in handcrafts. Many artisans use this resource to make sculptures, enamels, jewels and want nothing but to transmit their skill to the visitors.

Through a selection of natural sites, museums, outdoor activities, accommodations, inns and so on, Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Natural Park invites you to discover this unique identity. These service providers were chosen because of their warm welcome and because of their commitment to a form of tourism that is more respectful with the residents, environments and peculiarities of the region. This first thematic itinerary will make you want to continue your adventure in the other parks of the Massif Central, the largest protected area in Europe. Stone in the Cévennes, chestnuts in the Ardèche, skills in the Livradois-Forez or water in the Pilat will have no more mystery for you.
