The range of altitudes allows for layered vegetation in the same way as the relief and watercourses allow for great diversity of environments: Highland forest masses, plain forest masses, the Hautes-Chaumes du Forez with sub-alpine moors, dry hillsides, rocky gorges and steep-sided valleys, hedged farmland, wet prairies, marshes and ponds, watercourses and alluvial zones, peat bogs and mountainous wetlands.
