Pilat Regional Natural Park
Landscapes Pilat Regional Natural Park
The wealth of the Pilat is found in the variety of natural environment it contains. Its Mediterranean, Atlantic, continental and mountain influences can be seen in the landscapes.
The Condrieu region
The eastern edge of the Pilat, the Condrieu region reaches from the crests to the Rhône. Gradually, the forest gives way to wheat and corn fields. Great vintage vines hang proudly onto the slopes. At the bottom, the Rhône flows gently among its preserved islands with incomparable natural wealth: beavers, herons, orchids, etc.
The Gier slope
A steep slope, crisscrossed by deep valleys, the Pilat du Jarez dominates the Gier valley. Isolated farmhouses with typical architecture dot the landscape, like the dams that add a touch of blue to the dark green of the forests. The Carthusian monastery in Sainte Croix en Jarez and the Leap of the Gier, near its source, deserve a special mention.
The Valley of the Déôme
Green and undulating, the southern valley of the Pilat unveils its industrial past. On the hillsides, the prairies feed the cows and, higher up after the forest, at the peak of the massif, the moors give way to La Perdrix ridge peaking at 1432 metres. All along the rivers, the remains of windmills defy time next to medieval ruins and castles.
The Haut-Pilat plateau
The domain of skiing and winter snow, the high plateaus show their natural wealth during the spring flowering season. Streams, lakes and peat bogs contain remarkable flora and fauna. In the spring, the undulating prairies are covered with a thousand flowers that delight the cows and are a treat for lovers of good milk.
The Pélussinois
Alluvial forests along the Rhône, vineyards on the hills and orchards overlooking them, the Pélussinois is a part of the Pilat in the Rhône valley. Apples, pears, peaches and cherries are the pride of the orchards, grown next to famous wines. The gulleys that plunge towards the Rhône are home to remarkable natural environments where genets take refuge next to Opuntia ficus-indica cacti.
