Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Natural Park
The Park in action Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Natural Park
Examples of actions performed and projects in course. One keyword: sustainable development of the region. Since 1977, Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Natural Park has been working to save and rescue certain local races. In this way, the Ferrandaise cow, the Auvergne horse or even the Rava sheep, all originating in the region, have today been saved from extinction. The Chaîne des Puys is one of the most visited natural sites in the Park's territory. To limit the impact of tourists walking over these fragile volcanic areas, the Park has undertaken, with the help of its partners, the construction of wooden walkways to reduce soil erosion. To encourage itinerancy and environmentally friendly travelling methods, the Park has created two horse-riding trails which pass through the territory of the Auvergne volcanoes. 300 km of trails have been marked to allow an "alternative" discovery of the large open areas in the Auvergne. Since 2007, the Park has been working to achieve compliance with the European charter for sustainable tourism in protected areas. With the cooperation of all the players in the region, it aims to create a new strategy and a 5-year action plan to instil the values of sustainable tourism. Throughout the year 2008, the Volcans Park will be inviting residents and visitors alike to discover or rediscover certain symbolic themes of the territory. Traditional music of the Auvergne, gentian and bees will be among the first subjects covered. This cultural programme, which will take place in the Cantal (at the Maison de la Pinatelle in Chalinargues) will consist of a permanent exhibition, courses, debate conferences and workshops for children.
