Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Natural Park
Landscapes Volcans d'Auvergne Regional Natural Park
Five "scenic entities" make up the territory of Volcans d'Auvergne Natural Regional Park. The Cantal mountains: this is the largest volcano in Europe. It is in the shape of a flattened cone, crisscrossed by deep radial valleys, which are the scars of glacial erosion. Welcome to this green setting in the mountain environment. The Cézallier mountains: the vast flows of liquid lava created enormous open plateaux. Today, the Cézallier is often compared with the steppe landscape. This is also a prime location for observing superb peat bogs. The Artense: the only non-volcanic region in the territory, this granite plateau has a harmonious relief alternating between prairies, forests, lakes and peat bogs. The Dore mountains: this stratovolcano was formed by several eruptions with different types of lava and eruption styles. Le Puy de Sancy is the highest point, with an elevation of 1,885 m. The Chaîne des Puys: most recent manifestation of the long volcanic history of the Massif Central, it offers a lunar landscape made up of around 80 volcanoes aligned and perched at an altitude of 1,000 m.
